roboform

Roboform, a password management/form-filling tool created by Siber Systems, is, in a word, awesome. I personally have been using it for years now, after trying numerous other password programs and now, whenever asked, have recommended it to everyone I know. That's how good it is.

Roboform can work for someone who simply wants basic password management. For example, if you go to a website that requires a login you have already created, Roboform pops up and allows you to fill in the user ID and password with a single click...or will fill it in automatically, if you have chosen that option.

Now, sure, some websites and browsers, such as Internet Explorer, allow you that basic option. However, they do not offer you the security of being able to make certain logins secure and others not. And, after all, do you really want someone with access to your computer to be able to go to your online banking page and be automatically logged into your accounts? I did not think so.

Because of needs such as this, Roboform works great for people wanting far more security. For example, you can set up Roboform, either as a whole or by individual sites, so that that it requires a logon to be able to use Roboform to automatically fill in a user name/password/credit card number, etc.In the previous example, someone going to your online banking page would be faced with a Roboform popup asking them to log into Roboform itself before filling in the user information. Since they would not have that password, they would not be able to use Roboform to access your bank accounts.

Roboform can also set up multiple profiles. Not just profiles for different people, but for different categories, such as 'home' and 'work'. In addition, you can set up custom fields for each profile, such as PIN or age, add credit card information for each profile, and the like. This way, Roboform is not just a password manager, but also a form filler. You can also set up one password for multiple profiles or have separate passwords for each one. That way you could have one password, providing access to everything, while your teenager could be assigned a different password, giving them more restricted access to RoboForm.

RoboForm also offers a portable option called RoboForm To Go. The software is installed on a portable USB drive and you can carry it on your keychain. It will temporarily install on any PC that you use it on and all traces will be deleted as soon as you remove it. This allows you to safely and conveniently carry all your usernames and passwords with you wherever you go.
